3 Weeks in October - though not really

‘3 Weeks in October’

This part of the module is weighted at 20% of the total module mark.

Part 1 consists of 3, one week long projects which will challenge your understanding and application of the Animation Principles. The projects are designed to be short, focused exercises allowing you to re-sharpen your creative skills and minds after the Summer break; to blow away the cobwebs and to get you geared up for the final year of your Degree!

The three, week-long projects are:

• The Power of 9 - Principle Prepositions
• Onomatopoeia
• 25fps@staffs STING

This part of the module will result in a collection of short animated clips and exercises done throughout the first three weeks of the semester. Describe three dimensionally in either drawn, CGI or Stop Motion animation the 9 diagrams below.

BETWEEN

This is a week-long project allowing you to illustrate your understanding and application of the Animation Principles. Complete the 9 short animations in one week. You should spend no more than 2 hours per animated preposition.
You may use primitive forms: Cube, Sphere, Cone, Cylinder, Pyramid or simple characters that may be twisted, squashed, stretched, morphed - but their shape should return to the same form as when they started. The “characters” may be any scale at the start and do not have to remain the same size.
The focus of the exercise is on timing and making each frame count. Use pauses and holds to punctuate the action. This makes the sequences more dynamic. Use of sound or Foley will be an integral part of the production. There is no prescribed time duration for the finished piece.

1. ON or ON TOP OF
2. UNDER / BELOW
3. BEHIND
4. IN FRONT OF
5. NEXT TO

6. BETWEEN
7. OVER or ABOVE
8. THROUGH
9. INSIDE

Onomatopoeia – Lead by Daryl Marsh

What is Onomatopoeia? Simply – it is a word that imitates or suggests the source of the sound that it describes... ‘sizzle’, ‘zip’, ‘chomp’, ‘crack’, ‘splash’, ‘thud’...

This is a week-long project examining the use of Foley sound and how the use of sound can be utilised as the source and basis of a short animation. You will produce a 30 second animated sequence, with sound based on a list of 6 onomatopoeic words.

You will create your chosen sounds in the Foley sound studio. Choose one of the below columns of words – A, B, C, D or E. You can re-order the words as you please, but your animated sequence must include text, picture and sound relating to all 6 words in your chosen list.

Finished films must be 30 seconds exactly.

A
beep
gurgle
quack
pop
phew
twang

B
knock
squash
meow
rustle
snap
flap

C
fizz
zoom
crackle
drip
flap
whip

D
hum
flop
bubble
achoo
baa
sniff

E
jingle
eek
burp
scratch
quiver
squelch

25fps@staffs STING – Lead by Laura Weston

This is a week-long project that allows you to create a short animated sting - working to a given soundtrack and based on designs and artwork that you will be given – the ‘Paper-Cut’ & 'Print-Dot' imagery and ‘i-KON’ that form part of the Staffordshire University Animation Department ‘brand’. The purpose of this brief is to focus on the skills needed to animate to sound and to a tight brief.
Working in pairs you will choose a sound-file created for the project that you will develop into an animated sting of the exact length of the given sound. The final frame of each sting must be the ‘Paper-Cuts’ logo that includes the words ANIMATION and 25FPS@STAFFS. You may choose either character or abstract animation and choose either drawn, CGI or Stop Motion animation to realise your final piece.
The finished work should be of a high standard, suitable for public viewing on the University website and Animation Department show reel.

Keep it short. Keep it simple. Keep it clear.

Part 1 of the module culminates in individual presentations of work completed so far, as well as presenting your Summer Brief work. Part 1 presentations will start on MONDAY 13th October 2014.
