MOTION GRAPHICS – TYPE & TITLE (Weighted at 20% of total module mark)
2013-14
(Channel 4) Research a range of broadcast title sequences from television and film which
primarily uses type rather than image.

From this primary research you should prepare a mood board of typeface from magazines and newspaper articles for a title sequence for an imagined documentary programme to be screened on Channel 4. The subject matter of the ‘documentary' is open for you to choose.

Look at the "descriptive" quality of type and examine how appropriate its use is within the context of the imagined documentary subject matter.

You should explore a range of contemporary issues that are likely to be aired on this channel. Ensure you are pitching the title sequence at its ‘demographic’ - the typical audience Channel 4 targets.
Create a 20 second title sequence or ‘ident’ for this documentary which uses typeface as its primary imagery
The sequence should be exactly 20 seconds with sound (original / copyright and royalty free)
The work must contain the Channel 4 logo

Research

Font/typeface seems to express a feeling of professionalism and a manly sort of elegance, the letters are straight and bold but with slight curves to soften it, overall it looks very masculine. The colour changes, perhaps because of the different series of the show. It fits quite well with the feel of the show and links perfectly to the main character.
The title sequence is simple and extremely effective. It shows the name of the show and the lined silhouette of the city it is based in with addition simplistic animations to decorate and show different the episodes/series.

*UPDATE: 07/03/14

My idea: The imagined documentary programme that I have chosen is to do with Vampires. I have aptly named it "My Best Friend's a Vampyre." Not be mistaken for the 1987 film "My Best Friend Is a Vampire"

There have been many documentaries around and about the same sort of subject, it is not uncommon to know, meet or see people who believe themselves to be Vampires. Some instances are different than others but still, personally, intriguing and compelling. It can be down to both physiological and mental problems with a person or persons.

The 'descriptive' qualities of the text need to link nicely with the subject matter. As shown in the moodboard above the font/type that I have found mostly all have a sharp edge to the letters, mostly the letter 'V', which can connect to fangs of Vampires. Sharp and gothic with a fantasy sort of curve to the letters are what I would find perfect for the font needed.

The most common and famous fonts related to Vampires, that most recall, are that of Twilight and Dracula, once again the font can be shown to be sharp yet curvaceous.

*Writeon Effect?

Written storyboard:-
Green Screen - Girl drinking s glass of 'blood' with an overlay of her being asked a question - perhaps with text falling into subtitles, showing what is said/what she says - Perhaps some letters create the title of the documentary?
->Background of Green Screen is a still photo of a Graveyard - mist moving? Camera panning?

Title font - Created or taken from font sites i.e. dafont.com

New Idea: Blood spills/splays onto wall or floor with text within
*No Green Screen

I drew what I thought to be good font to use for my work, using the research I had gathered and my own idea into what I wanted the font to look like. I believe the second one is better than the first, though the first still has a nice unique style that I may use some other time.

Animation Test: https://vimeo.com/91317456
Though I've only just posted it on 07/04/14 I drew and animated it on 05/04/14

*UPDATE: 11/04/14

Feedback: Vampire teeth idea is good but too cartoon-y. Other idea preferred.
*Gothic font
*Bulk of letter first and then animated twirls
*Blood splatter - the best visuals
*Drips animated
*Try both - Blood hit wall and floor
* Words as shine in blood/light reflections - White
*Black background - Red blood - White text
