External Brief

EXTERNAL BRIEF component

During the module you will undertake a negotiated project with an external client under the guidance of your tutors. You will use creative and technical approaches developed over your previous levels of learning on the course to meet the requirements of the client through this negotiated external brief.

A 950 word written report will accompany the completed work. Any animation or screen-based work should be evidenced through your personal Vimeo site – the URL to be included within the report. Models, sets and illustrations can be photographically documented within the report or Blog.
This flexible module will provide you with an opportunity to experience working of on an external brief with the aim of enhancing your C.V. and showreel.

You will decide what type of project best suits your ambitions and career goals – it may be in the form of a competition and/or a live brief with an industry facing client or with an outside agency or individual.

Over the initial weeks you will be invited to attend presentations detailing opportunities from external clients seeking creative contributions to their projects. You will also be expected to conduct research online to identify potential avenues for career development.

The external client will likely set limitations and specific design constraints on your work - this will prepare you for working outside of University to negotiate and navigate career development opportunities in the future.

* THE STAFFORDSHIRE DOG PROJECT: 2015

ABOUT:

The Staffordshire Dog Project is a working partnership between Staffordshire University & The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery and Stoke-based Moorland Pottery, designed to engage students and our local communities in a collective arts project which reflects Stoke-on-Trent's industrial and creative heritage in a contemporary, fun and exciting way.

The Project commenced in September 2014 with the traditional 'Staffordshire Dog' being re-imagined, designed and sculpted by local ceramicist, illustrator and recent Graduate of Staffordshire University - Jasmine Simpson.

20 well known people with a connection to Stoke and the Midlands will then be invited to create individual designs to be applied to the finished ceramic dogs.

An open-call to members of the public to create designs for an additional 20 dogs will also allow local communities, schools, art groups, and individuals across the region to also be involved in the Project. 20 Public designs will be selected for the final show.

The Brief:

ANIMATING THE STAFFORDSHIRE DOG PROJECT: 2015

To create a 10-30 second animated sequence that features dogs - or The Staffordshire Dog and reflecting the traditions and visual styles of one, or more ceramicists that are associated to Stoke-on- Trent.

For example: Emma Bridgewater
Wedgwood
Royal Doulton
Spode
Royal Worcester
Moorcroft
Royal Crown
Middleport Pottery
Burleigh Pottery
Leeds Pottery
Flux
Dunoon
Denby
Portmeirion
...etc.

Finished pieces must be to a professional, broadcast quality, suitable for public viewing by all ages.

It is hoped that the collected pieces will demonstrate a broad and eclectic range of art and craft styles.

Films must end with the title card:

UPDATE: 01/02/15

References/research:

During my research I found that the Staffordshire dog was probably a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and so I searched this breed of dog for references and guidelines on how they look. I wanted to have a small puppy walk to an adult dog of the same breed, all the while the puppy's coat would be changing colour/patterns; this is to show information/explain the project in animation form, explaining what the project is about mostly e.i. 20 well known people with a connection to Stoke and the Midlands will then be invited to create individual designs to be applied to the finished ceramic dogs.

I then researched the list of ceramicists for patterns and the different looks of what is created, picking my favourite among them:
* Emma Bridgewater
* Wedgwood
* Moorcroft

*UPDATE: 05/02/15

I have been struggling horridly because of the bitter weather, which has slowed my progression on the Staffordshire Dog Project. However, after battling with the cold, I can use my fingers well enough to draw!
Finally, I am able to start animating with only a few days left of the project. I hope to get it done in time!

* EXTERNAL BRIEF: HOME FRONT POETRY COMMISSION
“14” WW1 Home Front Poetry Commission
Tom Wyre, Staffordshire’s Poet

13. Bomb Girl
A daughter from a farm in Salt,
Men away, patriotism and a heavier purse,
Munitionettes yellowed like canaries,
A different sort of mine for them to see,
Ones with fuses, working hard crushing powders,
No powder to cover this face.
Essential work albeit for a sad cause,
They say a fight to end all wars,
Best not to think too much of it.
Dexterity used to preening hair and plucking eyebrows,
Applying lipstick, red turned to revenge,
Working to apply the kiss of death,
Factories filling shells with pitch,
Broom handles and mallets,
Acid fumes and breathed in blackness.
Twisting the fuse, detonator blocks, innocent casing.

An iron mask diffusing dreams,
Stares at the closing trees and spits its shell,
A cuckoo that spins through the sky,
Batters the fathers as babies cry,
Head butting hell for birds shriek and burst from nests.
A different sort of garden dug and hoed,
A radical blossom blown,
A gnarled seed sown,
Trenches raked for the home front and the carrots topped to toe.
Cordite a spiteful perfume,
Mothers and wives forced to maim sons,
Albeit those of other brothers.

= I was asked to do some live action footage/Acting - woman putting on makeup/perfume
Assisting Lewis Jacobs, Siddhanth Shetty, and Darcy Trafalgar with their project.

Time estimated: 3 Hours overall

* Pre-vis of an innovative library and cataloguing system

First contact with Vinod Pallapati was through email. The response was rapid and we discussed a date to meet in person to go over the details of what it was that he wished for me to achieve.

*UPDATE: 18/03/15

Meeting with Vinod = 2pm - 3pm
The meeting consisted of an explanation of the entire idea and the workflow and creative process behind it. It was very informative and very easy to understand. There was a visual aid as Vinod took me upstairs in the University library to describe and show his idea better, using imagination with the area around us.

*UPDATE: 20/03/15

Meeting with Vinod = 12pm - 2pm
The meeting held more in-depth explanations, as well as a script written up by Vinod himself to further explain his plans for what he wishes me to do for him concerning a Pre-vis.
He also supplied video links to inspire me and to show the types of things that inspired him.

*UPDATE: 27/03/15

Had another meeting with Vinod in the Library at 1pm where we discussed things further. At first things were going to be done in 3D but I felt it best to change it to 2D considering the licensing connected with free character rigs that would have been used in the animation/advertisement.

The animation should show Vinod's idea, promote it, and also show what is wrong with the current library system.

*UPDATE: 14/04/15

After receiving an email from Vinod giving me new instructions to edit the video for his presentation on Wednesday, I spent a large portion of the day doing as he asked, which included: Taken 5 seconds from the start, splitting the video into two videos instead of one, and slowing down both videos as he believed the animation went too fast before.

Time estimated: 8 Hours (including rendering and uploading time)

New time estimated overall: 72 Hours
